Data Science Intern
The SWA Tax Team is made up of 21 Warriors, each possessing a Servant’s Heart and a Fun-LUVing Attitude. Together, we take care of all things “tax” for Southwest. Our work is performed almost entirely in-house, and we keep our fingers on the pulse of the Company at all times.
Join Southwest as a Spring Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from January 31 through April 21.
Work fully remotely, with opportunities to connect with your Team and other workgroups virtually and potential to travel to visit our Dallas, TX Headquarters.
Dedicate a minimum of 24 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks, up to 40 hours a week. We recommend checking your Spring schedule now to ensure availability.
Receive an hourly pay of $22 and receive a one-time $500 stipend on your first paycheck.

Interns will receive any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.
The Data Scientist Intern will support the various exciting data initiatives within the company aiming to use advanced modeling and statistical methods to gain insight, make scientifically-informed decisions, and improve the company’s overall operational and financial performance.
In this role, the Data Scientist Intern will work with the Data Science Team to analyze market performance and maturity, create and improve financial forecasting models, build and automate decision support tools, and contribute to other data driven projects.
The ideal candidate must have a strong background in quantitative analysis, including statistics, modeling, and data acquisition. They will have the opportunity to work with experienced airline and data science professionals and are expected to bring a passion for utilizing data to support strategic decision making. They must have strong verbal and written communication skills to engage both technical and non-technical audiences and must be able to work across business lines with a variety of stakeholders.
Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:
Duties and Responsibilities
Acquiring data from relational databases using SQL (Teradata, MySQL, SQLite, and/or Oracle)
Analyzing data with R or Python (scikit learn, pandas, or similar)
Developing time series models
Developing classification and regression models
Support and update decision support tools created in various applications such as Microsoft Access (potentially including VBA)
Statistical work such as accuracy calculations, model comparisons, or significance testing
Using data to inform and support decision makers and Leaders
Job Requirements
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent education required.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.
Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
Progressing towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Financial Analysis, Business Intelligence, Analytics, Operations Research, Statistics, or related data science programs
Minimum Sophomore level required
Junior level preferred
Graduate Level course work preferred
Statistics and finance courses preferred
To be eligible must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours.)
Maintained 2.5 or above cumulative GPA
Hands-on statistical modeling or machine learning experience (Examples: regression and classification models, cluster analysis, decision trees, factor analysis, significance testing, etc.) preferred.
Working knowledge of statistics such as regression techniques, time series modeling, machine learning, significance testing preferred.
Must possess a working knowledge of, Python, R, SAS, or other language for statistical modeling.
Must have a working knowledge of SQL.
Familiarity with data visualization tools and capabilities, such as Tableau are preferred.
Working knowledge of financial concepts (revenue, costs, operating income, operating margin, etc) preferred.
Able to use PowerPoint to build presentations for verbal communications is preferred.
Able to analyze large and complex business or technical problems and translate analysis into viable recommendations.
Previous internship, capstone projects, and analytics coursework is preferred.
Able to work effectively in a strong Customer service /team oriented environment.
Able to prioritize responsibilities effectively.
Previous internship experience in a related field is preferred.
Ability to properly manage sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to plan and support large business initiatives.
