Job Description
Southwest Airlines is seeking Ramp Agents to work in outdoor elements, directing planes, handling cargo, and ensuring smooth ground operations. These problem-solvers enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and collaborate with other Ground Operations Teams to meet flight departure timelines. They are responsible for providing friendly service to customers and maintaining positive relationships with internal and external customers.
The Ramp Agents load, unload, service, guide, and direct Company aircraft, receiving and recording customer baggage, air freight, mail, and company materials. They handle all aspects of loading, stowing, and unloading baggage, cargo airmail, air freight, ballast, and company materials according to a predetermined plan. They pick up, deliver, and transport cargo and baggage to and from aircraft, preparing records and ensuring customer safety.
The Ramp Agents also warehouse, weigh, stack, pick up, and deliver air cargo, and ensure customer baggage, air cargo, air mail, and COMAT are protected from weather, loss, theft, damage, or destruction. They also perform interior aircraft cabin cleaning by hand, clean windows, galleys, and disposal containers, and may perform duties as a Provisioning Agent.
Duties vary by size and organization of station, but the ideal candidate should be able to meet physical ability requirements and perform other job duties as directed by Employee's Leaders.
Benefits and Offers
The pay for this position is $18.00 per hour, with the potential for future increases based on the collective bargaining agreement wage scale. Benefits include free fly on open seats on all Southwest flights, a 9.3% 401(k) match, and the potential for annual profit-sharing contributions towards retirement. The pay amount does not guarantee employment, and 401(k) match and profit-sharing contributions are subject to the plan's vesting schedule and IRS limits.
Job Requirements
No education or experience requirement is required.
Licensing/certifications include a valid state motor vehicle operator's license, a SIDA badge, and USPS clearance. Physical abilities include lifting and moving items of 70 pounds or more, climbing, kneeling, crawling, and stooping, working in cramped or high places, and carrying heavy items up and down jetway stairs.
The Ramp Agent position requires excellent communication skills, teamwork, and ability to work under stressful situations. The ideal candidate should complete the Ramp Agent training program with a 90% or greater average and an evaluation period. They must be aware of hazardous situations and handle emergencies as needed. They must work under tight time constraints and must meet grooming standards as outlined in the Ground Operations Employee Handbook and Labor Agreement.
Other qualifications include maintaining a well-groomed appearance, being a U.S. citizen or having authorization to work in the U.S., being at least 18 years old, complying with company attendance standards, and working shift work and overtime.
