Main Objectives
We are looking for an experienced Airport Duty Officer to join our Gulf Air team at Athens International Airport. In this role, you will oversee multiple customer handling areas — including check-in, departure gates, transit, and arrivals — making sure every operation runs smoothly, safely, and to our service standards. You will be the person on the ground making decisions, directing staff, and keeping things moving even when flights are full, delayed, or disrupted.
What You Will Be Doing Day-to-Day?
Overseeing Customer Handling Areas: You will supervise check-in, departure gates, transit, and arrival functions. This means ensuring both Gulf Air staff and our handling agent's team are working accurately, promptly, and to the highest possible standard.
Leading the Shift Team: You will assign pre-flight duties to all staff and conduct de-briefings after flights to discuss any discrepancies, mistakes, or lessons learned.
Managing Passenger Irregularities: When passengers show up with invalid documents, visa issues, or other irregularities, you will direct check-in staff on how to handle the situation. You will also make decisions on excess baggage charges — including when to charge and when to waive.
Handling Denied Boarding Situations: If denied boarding occurs, you will guide check-in staff and personally deal with affected passengers. You will also ensure SSCI updates are completed for any downgrades or offloads.
Building and Maintaining Local Relationships: You will establish and maintain good working relationships with customs, immigration, security, police, medical teams, cargo, ground transport, catering, duty-free, courier companies, tour operators, and other airlines at ATH.
Managing Delays and Disruptions: When flights are delayed, you will ensure both company policy and local procedures are followed. Delayed passengers should receive proper assistance throughout the disruption.
Monitoring Handling Agent Performance: You will make sure our ground handling agent's output meets Gulf Air standards and aligns with the agreed contract. Any shortfalls will be reported daily to the Duty Manager or Airport Manager.
Enforcing Safety and Security: Strict adherence to company safety and security standards is non-negotiable. You will also monitor ramp activities and review Ground Safety Reports (GSRs), discussing appropriate actions with the Airport Manager.
Baggage Compliance: You will ensure company regulations for lost, found, or damaged baggage are followed — particularly the time limits associated with each case.
Uniform and Supplies Oversight: All staff on your shift must wear the company uniform to standard. You will also ensure adequate stock levels of all stationery and supervise distribution.
VIP and Special Passenger Care: You will coordinate quality service for VIPs, unaccompanied minors, and other special passengers in arrivals, departures, and transit areas — working closely with lounge staff.
Aircraft Equipment and Catering: You will communicate with the Duty Manager or Airport Manager about upgrading aircraft equipment if needed due to oversales. You will also monitor catering figures and update the catering unit well in advance to prevent wastage.
Revenue Generation: You will encourage Ground Handling Agent staff to actively sell ancillaries and generate additional revenue for Gulf Air.
Additional Tasks: You will carry out any other duties assigned by the Airport Manager.
What You Need to Qualify?
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant airport operations experience
- National Diploma or equivalent qualification
What We Are Looking For in Practice
This is not an entry-level role. We need someone who has worked airport shifts before, knows how to handle irregular operations calmly, and can make sound decisions under pressure. You should be comfortable directing both Gulf Air employees and third-party handling staff, dealing with frustrated passengers, and keeping multiple flights organized at the same time. Athens is a busy station, and we need an officer who can represent Gulf Air professionally in every interaction — with passengers, authorities, and partner agencies.
About the Application Process
If you meet the criteria and are genuinely enthusiastic about this role, we welcome your application. Please have the following documents ready before you begin:
- Resume/CV
- Passport-size photograph
- Highest education certificate
